He was a star during the 1920s and 1930s. He won seven major championships during his long career. This includes the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, The Open Championship, and the Masters Tournament. He is one of only six players to achieve a Career Grand Slam. This means he won all four major tournaments at least once. Other legends who did this are Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Sarazen's skill helped make the United States a leader in golf.

Sarazen changed how people play the game. He is famous for creating the modern sand wedge. He called his version the sand iron. Before this, playing from sand was very hard. He welded metal onto the back of the club. This made the bottom part sit lower than the front edge. This design helped the club explode the sand away. It also added weight to help the ball move through thick sand. Today, almost every golfer uses this same idea for their shots.

His journey began in Harrison, New York, in 1902. His parents were poor immigrants from Sicily. Gene started working as a caddy at age ten. He was mostly self-taught in the sport of golf. He used a special interlocking grip to hold his clubs. By age 18, he earned a spot in the U.S. Open. In 1922, he won both the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. These wins made him a famous professional player very quickly.

One of his greatest moments happened in 1935. He was playing in the Masters Tournament at Augusta National. He was trailing the leader by three shots. Then, he hit a "double eagle" on the fifteenth hole. This shot was so amazing people called it the shot heard 'round the world. He used a club called a spoon to hit it into the hole. After a 36-hole playoff, he won the whole tournament. This remains one of the most famous shots in history.

Sarazen loved golf until the very end of his life. He even made a hole-in-one at age 71 in Scotland. He worked as a TV commentator to help more people enjoy golf. He also held a very long contract with Wilson Sporting Goods. This deal lasted 75 years, from 1923 until he died. He passed away in 1999 at the age of 97. His legacy lives on through new clubs and many famous golf stories.
