Vardon had a very special way of holding his golf club. This method is known as the Vardon grip, or the overlapping grip. To use it, a player puts the little finger of their bottom hand between the index and middle fingers of their top hand. This grip was actually created by a player named Johnny Laidlay. However, Vardon made it famous by using it in his many matches. Today, more than 90 percent of golfers still use this exact same grip. It remains a key part of how people play the game.

Vardon's journey began on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. He was born in Grouville on May 9, 1870. As a teenager, he worked as a caddie to learn about the game. He was very close to his brother, Tom Vardon, who also loved golf. Because his family did not have much money, his path was not easy. He moved to England in the spring of 1890 to find work. He first worked as a greenkeeper at the Studley Royal Golf Club in Ripon.

Even after he stopped playing, Vardon's influence stayed with the sport. He became a golf course architect and designed several courses in Britain. He also wrote books to teach others how to play better. Vardon faced hard times with his health due to tuberculosis in 1903. He also had nerve damage in his hand that made putting difficult. He died in 1937 at the age of 66 in London. Today, the PGA of America honors him with the Vardon Trophy. This award goes to the player with the lowest scoring average each year.
