While many top players played for money, Jones was an amateur. This means he played for the love of the game. He earned his living as a lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia. Even though he was a great athlete, he chose to retire from competition at age 28. He once said that championship golf felt like a cage. He felt that people expected players to stay in it forever.

Jones was known for his incredible skill and his honesty. He often played with a sense of fairness called sportsmanship. In one famous match, his club moved his ball by mistake. No one else saw it happen, but Jones told the officials. He gave himself a penalty, even though it cost him the win. He did something similar during another U.S. Open. He moved his ball in the wind while setting up his shot. He called a penalty on himself again, but he still won that tournament.

He was the only player to ever win this specific Grand Slam in one calendar year.

Jones had a very busy and successful life. He was born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta. As a young boy, he played golf to help with his health. He won his first children's tournament at age six. By age 14, he won the Georgia Amateur Championship. He went to Georgia Tech and later studied at Harvard. He also went to Emory University to study law. In his golf career, he played 31 majors and won 13 of them. He even won two matches against Canada in 1919 and 1920.

After he stopped playing, Jones helped shape the sport we know today. He helped design the Augusta National Golf Club in 1933. He also co-founded the Masters Tournament. This tournament has been held every year since 1934, except during World War II. Jones also worked as an instructor and designed golf equipment. Later in life, he dealt with a health condition called syringomyelia. This made it hard for him to walk. He passed away in 1971 from cardiovascular disease.
