He was one of the most influential figures in golf history. Unlike professional players, Jones competed as an amateur. This meant he did not play for prize money. He earned his living as a lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia. Jones was a highly educated man with several degrees. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. Later, he earned an A.B. in English Literature from Harvard College. He also attended Emory University School of Law.

Jones's journey with golf began in his childhood. He was born on March 17, 1902, in Atlanta. As a young boy, he faced various health issues. Doctors prescribed golf to help strengthen his body. He was a child prodigy who won a tournament at age six. By age 14, he won the Georgia Amateur Championship.

This victory brought him national attention. He received an invitation to play in the U.S. Amateur at Merion. He was mentored by several professionals, including Stewart Maiden. He also received lessons from Willie Ogg during his teenage years.

During his peak from 1923 to 1930, Jones dominated the sport. He was incredibly successful against the world's best professional golfers. He often defeated stars like Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen. Jones played in 31 major championships during his career. He won 13 of those majors. He also finished in the top ten 27 times. He was the first player to achieve "The Double." This meant winning both the Open Championship and the U.S. Open in one year.

Jones's most famous achievement occurred in 1930. This was the year he achieved the Grand Slam. He won all four major championships in a single calendar year. First, he won the Amateur Championship in Scotland. Second, he won the Open Championship in England. Third, he won the U.S. Open in Minnesota. Finally, he won the U.S. Amateur in Pennsylvania.

He had even made a bet on this feat. He won over $60,000 from British bookmakers for completing the Slam.

Jones was also deeply respected for his sportsmanship. He believed in playing with absolute honesty. In the 1925 U.S. Open, his club accidentally moved his ball. No officials or partners saw the movement. However, Jones called a penalty on himself. This decision cost him the win during a playoff. He later did something similar at the Scioto Country Club. He moved his ball in the wind while setting up. He called a penalty again, but he still won that tournament. He did not seek praise for these honest actions.

After retiring from competition at age 28, Jones shaped the future of golf. He believed championship golf felt like a "cage." He did not want to be trapped by the pressure. In 1933, he helped design the Augusta National Golf Club. He also co-founded the Masters Tournament. The Masters has been held annually since 1934. It was canceled only from 1943 to 1945 due to World War II. His innovations at the Masters are still used by professional tournaments today.

He is often confused with the designer Robert Trent Jones. To avoid this, the golfer was called "Bobby." The designer was called "Trent." Today, his legacy lives on through golf and academic scholarships.
