Walter grew up in a working family in New York. As a young boy, he worked as a caddie. He carried golf bags to help his family. He practiced his game at a local club. Soon, he became an expert player.

Walter helped make golf a big and rich sport. In his time, pro golfers were not always treated well. Some clubs would not let them enter the clubhouse. Walter fought for better treatment for all pros. He wore bright, fancy clothes while he played. He also helped design golf clubs for a company called Wilson.
