The goal is to hit the ball into a hole. You want to do this in as few hits as possible. These hits are called strokes.

A golf course can have 9 or 18 holes. Each hole is a unique path. You start at a teeing ground. You can use a small peg called a tee to lift the ball. Then, you hit the ball toward the green. The green is a smooth area with a cup.

Many things can make the game hard. You might hit the ball into tall grass called the rough. You might find sand traps called bunkers. Water can also be a hazard. Some paths bend like a dog's knee. These are called doglegs.

People have played games like this for a long time. Some think it started with a Chinese game called chuiwan. The modern game began in Scotland in the 1400s. The first big tournament was The Open. It started in 1860. Today, people play for fun or to show great skill.
