Golf is a sport played with clubs and a ball.

The goal is to hit the ball into a series of holes. Players want to finish a course in as few hits as possible. These hits are called strokes.

There are two main ways to play. In stroke play, you count every single hit you make. In match play, you try to get the best score on each individual hole. Stroke play is the most common way to play today. It is used by almost all professional players in big tournaments.

Each hole on a golf course has its own special layout. You start at a teeing ground, which is also called a tee box.

You can use a small peg called a tee to lift the ball. This makes it easier to hit the ball cleanly. Most players use a long club called a driver for a big first hit. Then, they hit the ball again and again. They use different shots like a chip or a pitch to reach the green. Finally, they use a special stroke called a putt to sink the ball into the cup.

Many things on the course can make the game difficult. The fairway is the smooth grass where you want the ball to land.

If you miss, the ball might land in the rough, which is tall grass. You might also face hazards like sand-filled bunkers or water. Some holes even bend like a dog's knee. These are called doglegs. A dogleg left bends to the left, and a dogleg right bends to the right. Some holes even bend twice, which is called a double dogleg.

The history of golf is a very interesting mystery. Some people think it started with a Chinese game called chuiwan. A painting from 1368 shows a person playing a similar game. However, the modern game of golf began in Scotland. In 1457, King James II actually banned the game! He thought it stopped people from practicing archery. Later, King James IV lifted the ban because he liked to play golf himself. By 1764, the famous Old Course at St Andrews created the 18-hole standard.

Today, golf is played all over the world in many different settings. You can find courses in forests, deserts, or near the sea. A seaside course is often called a links course.

The oldest golf tournament is The Open Championship. It began in 1860 at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. In the United States, there are three other major championships. These are The Masters, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship. Whether playing for fun or for a trophy, golfers enjoy the challenge of the course.
