Each tile has a line dividing its face into two squares. These squares are marked with dots called pips or spots. Some squares are left blank. A collection of these tiles is called a domino set or a pack. People use these sets to play many different games. Some people even enjoy domino toppling, which is lining them up to fall.

Most traditional European sets are called double-six sets. These contain 28 unique tiles. This set includes every possible combination of spots from zero to six. The highest value tile is the double-six, which has six pips on both ends. Some people play with much larger sets. A double-nine set has 55 tiles. A double-twelve set has 91 tiles. The largest common sets can have up to 190 tiles.

Dominoes have a very long history. The earliest mentions come from Song dynasty China. In the 13th century, people in Hangzhou sold tiles called pupai. These Chinese dominoes were different from the ones we use today. They were longer and represented results from throwing dice. Modern dominoes first appeared in France during the mid-18th century. The name likely comes from a Venetian carnival costume. This costume included a black hood and a white mask.

People have made dominoes out of many interesting materials. Older sets were often made from bone, ivory, or mother of pearl. Some were even carved from dark woods like ebony. Other sets used stone, metal, or ceramic clay. These materials can feel very heavy and expensive. Today, most commercial sets are made of plastic. These are often made of materials like ABS or Bakelite. Some modern sets use different colors for the dots to help players find matches.

There are many ways to play with a domino set. Some popular games include Muggins, also known as All Fives. Other games are called Mexican Train, Chicken Foot, and Texas 42. In Britain, many people play a league game called Fives and Threes. Some tiles even have a metal pin in the middle called a spinner. These spinners allow for special versions of games. Whether playing in a café or at home, dominoes bring people together through skill and fun.
