Vincent O'Brien was a legendary figure in the world of horse racing. He was born in 1917 in Churchtown, County Cork, Ireland. People around the world think he was a master of his craft. In a large poll by the Racing Post, he was voted the greatest influence in racing history. He was a champion in two different types of racing. These are called national hunt and flat racing. He is the only trainer ever to be a champion in both.

His work involved many important steps to help horses win. He had a special gift for picking world-class horses. He also worked on breeding them to make even better ones. In 1949, he was a pioneer in moving horses by plane. He used a converted RAF freighter to fly three horses to a festival. All three of those horses won their races. He spent much of his career at the famous Ballydoyle stables. These stables are located near Cashel in County Tipperary.

O'Brien's career began in 1944 with national hunt racing. This type of racing includes steeplechasers and hurdlers. He won the Grand National at Liverpool three times in a row. He did this with three different horses: Early Mist, Royal Tan, and Quare Times. He also trained the great Cottage Rake to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup three years straight. Later, he moved his focus to flat racing. This shift helped him build a massive legacy at Ballydoyle.

He trained many of the most famous horses in history. One of his best was Nijinsky, who won the British Triple Crown. Nijinsky was a son of a Canadian horse named Northern Dancer. O'Brien also won the Epsom Derby six times. His winners included Larkspur, Sir Ivor, Nijinsky, Roberto, The Minstrel, and Golden Fleece. He worked with famous riders like Lester Piggott. He also helped start the Coolmore syndicate. This group became a huge success in horse breeding.

Racing is a sport that involves many families. O'Brien's son, David, became a successful trainer too. David even won the Epsom Derby in 1984. Vincent's work lived on through his grandson and other family members. He lived much of his life between Ireland and Australia. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 92. His life changed how people breed and race horses forever. He remains a hero to many fans of the sport.
