The moth bean is a tough plant. It is a legume, which is a type of seed-bearing plant. People call it the mat bean or matki. It is native to India. Many people grow it there for food. It can also grow in the United States and Australia.

This plant is very good at surviving dry weather. It can grow with very little rain. It likes warm weather between 24 and 32 degrees Celsius. The plant grows low to the ground. This creates a cover. This cover helps stop soil erosion. Soil erosion is when dirt is washed or blown away.

Moth beans have yellow flowers. These flowers turn into brown pods. Each pod holds 4 to 9 seeds. The seeds can be yellow-brown or white-green. They can even have black spots.

These seeds are full of protein. Protein helps our bodies grow. People in India cook the seeds in many ways. They make a spicy stew called matki usal. They also make snacks like dalmoth. People can even eat the pods after boiling them.
