These plants can grow in many ways. Some are short and bushy. Others grow like vines that climb or crawl.

Cowpeas are great for dry places. They grow well in sandy soil. This helps farmers in parts of Africa and Asia. The plant has a special way to help the soil. Its roots have small parts called nodules. These nodules take nitrogen from the air. This makes the soil better for other crops nearby.

People eat the seeds for power. The seeds have much protein. They come in many colors like red, white, or black. Some have a black spot. We call these black-eyed peas.

People cook them in stews or make flour. You can also feed the whole plant to cows. This is likely why they are called cowpeas.

Insects can be a big problem. A pest called the pod borer eats the flowers and pods. Another insect, the weevil, eats the seeds after they are picked.
