His influence shaped the professional wrestling landscape for many decades. He is remembered for his technical skill and his dedication to the sport's athletic roots.

Gagne's journey began with high-level amateur competition. After serving in the United States Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Team, he returned to the University of Minnesota.

There, he won two NCAA titles in amateur wrestling. In 1948, he won the 191-pound class championship in Pennsylvania. He also competed for the U.S. freestyle wrestling team at the 1948 Olympic Games. His success in amateur wrestling provided the foundation for his professional career.

In 1949, Gagne transitioned into professional wrestling. He began his career in Texas and quickly rose to stardom. During the golden age of television, he became a household name on the Dumont Network.

He was famous for his technical prowess and his use of the sleeper hold. This move was his signature finishing technique. Gagne was highly successful, earning numerous championships across different organizations and regions.

As a champion, Gagne set incredible records in North America. He was an 11-time world champion in major professional wrestling promotions. He held the AWA World Heavyweight Championship ten separate times. He also won the IWA World Heavyweight Championship, which was recognized in Japan.

Gagne holds the record for the longest combined reign as a world champion in North America. He also ranks third for the longest single title reign.

In 1960, Gagne shifted his focus from wrestling to promotion. He founded the American Wrestling Association (AWA) to operate independently from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The AWA became the dominant promotion throughout the Midwest and Manitoba. Gagne served as the owner and promoter until the company folded in 1991. He used a specific strategy to build his brand. He prioritized wrestlers with strong amateur backgrounds over those who relied solely on size.

This business philosophy created tension with the changing industry. Gagne preferred technical wrestlers over the charismatic power wrestlers who became popular in the 1980s. This led to a famous disagreement with Hulk Hogan. Gagne wanted a share of Hogan's revenue from merchandise and Japanese matches. When Hogan refused, he eventually moved to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).

This shift was part of a broader move toward a national wrestling system.

Gagne's career earned him rare honors in the wrestling world. He is one of only seven men inducted into the WWE, WCW, and Professional Wrestling halls of fame. He was also inducted into the Nebraska Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. These honors recognize his immense impact on the sport. His legacy is defined by his transition from a decorated athlete to a major industry leader. He remained a central figure in wrestling history until his death in 2015.
