He was a professional wrestler, martial artist, and promoter. He also served as a politician in the Japanese government. Inoki is best known for founding New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). He owned the company for 33 years. He was a massive influence on mixed martial arts (MMA). His career bridged the gap between staged wrestling and real fighting.

Inoki developed unique ways of performing in the ring. He created "strong style" and "shoot style" wrestling. These styles emphasized realistic martial arts techniques. In these matches, wrestlers used strikes and grappling that looked like real combat. This approach helped pave the way for modern MMA. One famous example was his 1976 fight against boxer Muhammad Ali. This match is considered a predecessor to today's mixed martial arts. It showed how different combat sports could interact in a single arena.

His wrestling career involved many different stages and roles. He began as a student of the legendary Rikidōzan. In 1963, he adopted the name Antonio Inoki. This was a tribute to the Italian wrestler Antonino Rocca. He later became a champion many times over. He was a twelve-time professional wrestling world champion. Notably, he was the first Asian WWF Heavyweight Champion. He was also the first IWGP Heavyweight Champion. These titles established his dominance in the industry.

Inoki's journey began with a childhood of movement and discipline. He was born in Yokohama in 1943. His family moved to Brazil when he was 14. In Brazil, he became a champion in track and field. He won regional titles in shot put, discus, and javelin. He also won the All Brazilian championships in shot put and discus. These athletic skills likely helped his later success in wrestling. He eventually returned to Japan to train under Karl Gotch. This training prepared him for his professional debut in the 1960s.

As a promoter, Inoki reached incredible heights of popularity. In 1972, he founded New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He led the company until 2005. During his career, he organized massive events. In 1995, he held two shows in North Korea. These events featured him wrestling Ric Flair. The crowds were enormous for professional wrestling. One show drew 165,000 spectators. The other drew 190,000 spectators. These remain the highest attendances in wrestling history.
