Mark William Calaway is a retired American professional wrestler.

He is most famous for his ring name, the Undertaker. Many people consider him one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He spent 30 years wrestling for WWE. This makes him the longest-tenured wrestler in the company's history. In 2022, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Calaway's career was built on distinct character identities, or gimmicks. His most famous persona was the "Deadman."

To perform his character, Calaway used specific theatrical tools. In 1991, he began working with a manager named Paul Bearer.

Bearer was a real-life funeral director who played a ghostly, wailing character. He carried an urn to the ring. In the story, Bearer would raise the urn to give the Undertaker supernatural healing powers. This allowed the Undertaker to recover from attacks and fight back. Calaway also used a ritual where he placed defeated opponents in body bags.

Calaway's path to fame involved many different wrestling organizations. He began training in late 1986 under Buzz Sawyer.
