Gotch grew up on a small farm near Humboldt, Iowa. He began wrestling in his teenage years after beating local opponents. His career took a major turn after a match against "Farmer" Martin Burns. Burns was a former American Heavyweight Champion. Although Gotch lost that match in 1911 minutes, Burns was impressed by his skill. Burns became Gotch's mentor and trained him professionally. Under this guidance, Gotch traveled to places like the Yukon. In the Yukon, he wrestled under the name Frank Kennedy and became the "Champion of the Klondike."

Gotch developed a highly technical approach to the sport. He was known for his immense strength and cat-like agility. He mastered the use of leverage to control his opponents. His most famous signature move was the toe hold. This was a finishing move designed to force an opponent to submit. He combined aggressive tactics with great composure. He could remain calm even while using high-pressure maneuvers. This scientific approach to grappling helped him dominate the ring.

In 1908, Gotch faced the legendary George Hackenschmidt in Chicago. Hackenschmidt was an undefeated Estonian known as the "Russian Lion." This match at the Dexter Park Pavilion lasted two full hours. Gotch used speed and defense to wear Hackenschmidt down. He also used rough tactics, such as leaning on his opponent to tire him. The match was intense and even involved blood. Eventually, Gotch applied his dreaded toe hold. Hackenschmidt could not resist the move and surrendered the championship.

Gotch's reign as World Heavyweight Champion was remarkably long. He held the title from 1908 until his retirement in 1913. This five-year period is one of the ten longest reigns in wrestling history. He defeated many notable champions, including Tom Jenkins and Stanislaus Zbyszko. In 1910, Gotch beat Zbyszko in a spectacular fashion. He won the first fall in only six seconds. He won the second fall in 27 minutes. His career record was incredibly impressive, with 154 wins and only six losses.

Gotch became a massive national sensation during the 1900s and 1910s. He was a celebrity who appeared in many public places. He even starred in a stage play called "All About A Bout." Whenever he walked onto a stage, audiences gave him standing ovations. His fame was so great that President Theodore Roosevelt invited him to the White House. He even wrestled a Japanese ju-jitsu expert in the East Hall of the White House. He was a true star of the era.

In 1911, Gotch had a famous rematch with Hackenschmidt at Comiskey Park. This event drew nearly 30,000 spectators. The gate for this single match was a record $87,000. The match was controversial due to a knee injury Hackenschmidt suffered during training. Some claimed the injury was an accident involving a sparring partner named Dr. Roller. Others suggested it was caused by intentional interference. Regardless, Gotch used the injury to his advantage. He won the match in only 30 minutes using his toe hold. This victory cemented his dominance in the sport.
