It is the second-largest telecommunications company in the world by revenue. In the United States, its mobile network is the largest wireless carrier. As of June 30, 2025, it had 146.1 million subscribers. This company plays a major role in how we talk and share information.

How the company works involves many different parts and services. It uses mobile networks to send signals to phones without wires. It also uses Fios, which is an internet service that works through fiber optic cables. These cables use light to send data very quickly.

In 2002, the company began offering phone and internet services in a bundle. This meant people could get many services in one package. They also provide television services to many homes.

The company has a long history that began with a big change. In 1983, the US government helped break up a large system called the Bell System. This created seven smaller companies known as "Baby Bells."

One of these was Bell Atlantic, which started in 1984. Bell Atlantic was first based in Philadelphia. It served states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. In 1997, it merged with another Baby Bell called NYNEX. This merger moved the main office to New York City.

Verizon grew much larger through many big deals and mergers. In 2000, Bell Atlantic merged with GTE. This merger was worth $64.7 billion and helped create the name Verizon. The name comes from the Latin word "veritas," meaning truth, and the word "horizon."

Later, in 2005, the company bought MCI for $8.5 billion. This gave them many new business customers around the world. In 2026, Verizon also bought Frontier Communications for $20 billion. These steps helped the company become a global leader.

You can see how Verizon connects to your daily life. When you use a smartphone to text a friend, you might be using their network. If you watch high-definition TV at home, you might use their fiber optic technology. They even helped shape the internet by launching 3G service in 2002. This service made internet speeds much faster than they were before. Even the way companies buy and sell internet websites involves them. They once owned parts of AOL and Yahoo! to reach more people.
