Verizon provides the essential infrastructure for modern communication. This includes mobile phone signals, internet access, and television services.

The company operates through several complex technological systems. One major system is its mobile wireless network. This network allows phones to connect without physical wires. Another key service is Fios, which is a fiber optic internet service. Fiber optic technology uses thin cables to transmit data as pulses of light. This method allows for very high speeds.

In 2002, Verizon began bundling local, long-distance, and mobile calling with internet services. This helped customers manage multiple communication needs through one provider.

Verizon's current form is the result of many historical mergers. The company's roots trace back to the 1983 breakup of the Bell System. The US Department of Justice reached a settlement to divide the original AT&T. This created seven Regional Bell Operating Companies, known as "Baby Bells."

One of these original companies was Bell Atlantic, formed in 1984. Bell Atlantic was originally based in Philadelphia. It served states like Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The company grew through strategic combinations with other large entities. In 1997, Bell Atlantic merged with NYNEX. This merger moved the corporate headquarters to New York City. In 2000, Bell Atlantic merged with the telephone company GTE. This $64.7 billion merger was approved by the FCC. Following this merger, Bell Atlantic changed its name to Verizon Communications. The name is a portmanteau. It combines "veritas," the Latin word for truth, with the word "horizon."

Verizon has expanded its reach through many significant acquisitions. In 2000, it formed Verizon Wireless. This was a joint venture with the British company Vodafone. This venture was valued at approximately $70 billion. It combined various wireless holdings to offer national coverage. In 2005, Verizon purchased the long-distance carrier MCI for $8.5 billion. This deal gave Verizon access to one million corporate clients. Later, in 2008, Verizon announced it would purchase Alltel for $28.1 billion. This helped Verizon Wireless surpass AT&T in customer numbers.

The company has also explored the world of digital content. In 2015, Verizon acquired AOL to expand into content ownership. Two years later, it acquired Yahoo! Inc. These two companies were combined into a division called Oath Inc. This division was later rebranded as Verizon Media in 2019. Eventually, the media assets were sold to Apollo Global Management. Verizon has also made recent moves in infrastructure. In 2026, the company acquired Frontier Communications for $20 billion.

Throughout its history, Verizon has faced various challenges and legal moments. In August 2000, about 85,000 workers went on an 18-day labor strike. This strike affected the company's quarterly revenues. In 2006, the company faced a $50 billion lawsuit regarding privacy. This was related to the sharing of landline phone records with the National Security Agency. Additionally, in 2010, Verizon Wireless confirmed it had blocked traffic from the website 4chan.org. The company stated this was done to protect the network from sweep attacks. These events show how a large utility interacts with law, labor, and technology.
