It is the second-largest company of its kind in the world. Its mobile network is the largest in the United States. By June 2025, it had 146.1 million subscribers.

The company started in 1983. Back then, it was called Bell Atlantic. It was one of seven companies called "Baby Bells." These companies were made when a large system called the Bell System broke up.

Bell Atlantic grew by joining with other companies. In 1997, it merged with a company named NYNEX. This move moved its main office to New York City.

In 2000, Bell Atlantic joined with GTE. This big change led to a new name. The name Verizon comes from two words. One is a Latin word for truth. The other is the word horizon.

Verizon also uses fiber optic cables. These are special lines that send data using light. This helps provide fast internet and TV services.
