Venus clams belong to a large family called Veneridae.

These saltwater clams live in the sea. There are more than 500 living species of these clams. Most of them are edible for people.

Many of these species are used as food sources. In the United States, people often call them "clams." One important kind is the hard clam, or quahog, named Mercenaria mercenaria. They are a big part of the world fishery for edible bivalves.

These clams are bivalves, which means they have two shells.

The shells have special parts to help them work. Each shell has three interlocking structures called cardinal teeth. These teeth sit at the top of each valve. Some subfamilies also have extra teeth called anterior lateral teeth. One tooth is in the left valve. Two more teeth can be found in the right valve.

These parts help the two shells fit together well.

Scientists have studied how to group these clams for a long time. This task is called taxonomy. The way we group them has been controversial since the 1930s. Many people used to look only at the outside of the shell. This is called superficial classification. Now, scientists use molecular approaches to study them. This means they look at tiny things inside the body. This new way shows that old groups were often not natural. Because of this, the names of many species change often.

Clam shells can look very different depending on where they live.

Some shells have patterns that go in circles. Other shells might have spines or lines. The Tivela species have a triangular shape for the surf zones. Some Dosinia species look almost like a disc. These circular clams burrow deep into the sand. A rare group called Samarangiinae lives in coral reefs. They use cemented sand or mud to hide their shells.

Most venerid clams have solid shells that are oval or round.

The shells have bumps called umbones that point forward. They also have a large foot for moving. They use short tubes called siphons to live. These siphons are united at the tip. This is similar to how you might use a straw. You can find fossils of these clams from a long time ago. Some come from the Late Cretaceous period near Amman, Jordan.
