Nereididae are a family of sea worms called ragworms or clamworms. These living things live mostly in the salty ocean. There are about 500 different species in this family. They are split into 42 different groups called genera. These worms are important to the ocean food web. Many shore-birds rely on them as a food source.

Ragworms have a very interesting way they work. They have a part called a pharynx that can push outward. This pharynx has two main parts. It has a pair of strong jaws on the end. They also have conical teeth on one or more areas. These teeth are made of a special protein. This protein uses zinc ions to stay strong. It is not made of calcium like our bones.

Scientists have studied these worms for a long time. A person named Blainville named this family in 1818. Other scientists like Banse named a group in 1977. Research from 2008 looked closely at the jaws of a worm called Nereis virens. This study was published in a journal called Biomacromolecules. Researchers found the jaw material is very tough and light. This discovery might help engineers build better parts for planes.

There are many specific names for these worms. One subfamily is called Nereidinae. This group includes the worm Nereis, named by Linnaeus in 1758. Another group is called Gymnonereinae. This group has worms like Leptonereis, named by Kinberg in 1865. Some worms like Lycastopsis catarractarum can even climb onto land. Most ragworms live in seaweed, mud, or sand.

Humans interact with these worms in many ways. Fishermen use worms like Hediste diversicolor as bait. This helps them catch fish like pollock or wrasse. In Vietnam, the worm Tylorrhynchus heterochetus is a special food. It is used to make an omelet called chả rươi. In China, people find worms in rice-growing areas. They often cook these worms with eggs.
