life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Polychaetes are a huge group of marine worms. Most people call them bristle worms. They are very diverse and live all over the world. You can find them in every ocean on Earth. Some live near the sunlit surface. Others live in the darkest, deepest places. One unknown species was even seen in the Challenger Deep. This is the deepest part of the ocean.

These worms have a very interesting way they work. Their bodies are made of many segments. Each segment has a pair of fleshy legs called parapodia. These legs help the worm move around. They also help the worm breathe. Bundles of tiny bristles called chaetae grow on these legs. The bristles are made of a tough material called chitin. Most worms crawl on the bottom, but some swim or burrow.

Scientists have studied these worms for a long time. We know many different kinds exist today. There are more than 10,000 described species. Some worms, like the bobbit worm, can grow very large. This predator can reach 3 meters in length. Other worms are tiny. The Dimorphilus gyrociliatus has a very small genome. The males are only 50 micrometers long. They live for only about one week.

Many polychaetes have special lives in strange places. The Pompeii worm lives near hot vents in the Pacific Ocean. These vents have near-boiling water. This worm is one of the most heat-tolerant animals we know. Other worms, called Osedax, live on the bones of whales. Some worms live in tubes and can be very old. The Lamellibrachia luymesi can live for over 250 years. Some species can even glow in the dark. This is called bioluminescence.

These worms are linked to many things you might know. Some are used as fishing bait by people. You might see lugworms or sandworms in shallow water. Many worms have eyes to see light and dark. Some have very complex eyes like fish or squid. Most worms have separate sexes for making babies. They release eggs and sperm into the water. The babies often start as tiny swimming larvae.
