Most of these worms have many body parts called segments. Each segment has a pair of fleshy legs. These legs are called parapodia. They help the worm move or breathe. Many parapodia have bundles of tiny bristles called chaetae. These bristles are made of a tough material called chitin.

These worms have different ways of living. Some crawl on the ocean floor. Others swim in the water. Some live in tubes or even inside other animals. Their mouths can change based on what they eat. Many have jaws to grab food. They can even push their mouths out to catch prey.

Some polychaetes are very special. The Pompeii worm lives near hot vents in the sea. It can handle very high heat. Other worms, like the giant tube worm, can live for over 250 years! Some worms can even glow in the dark. This is called bioluminescence.
