Annelids are animals that look like little rings.

Their name comes from a Latin word meaning "little ring." There are over 22,000 species of these animals. They live in many places. Some stay in the salty sea. Others live in fresh water. Some live in wet soil.

Most annelids have bodies made of many parts. We call these parts segments. Each segment has the same organs inside. Many species use small limbs called parapodia to move.

Some worms use a way of moving called peristalsis. This is when ripples pass along the body.

Earthworms are a type of annelid. They help the soil by making it rich. They also help air get into the dirt. Other annelids are very big. One kind can grow to 22 feet long!

Some annelids are also used as bait for fishing. Scientists study them to check if water is clean. They are a very important part of our world.
