Peanut worms are fascinating marine animals known as Sipuncula.

Scientists estimate there are about 162 different species in the world's oceans. These worms are part of a group called Annelida. They used to be thought of as their own separate group. However, new studies on molecules showed they belong with other segmented worms. Even though they look smooth, they actually have a history of being segmented. Most of these worms are quite small in size. They live in many places, from cold polar waters to warm equatorial seas.

A peanut worm has a very special body shape. It has a large, bulbous trunk and a narrower front part called an introvert. The worm can pull this introvert back into its trunk. This action makes the worm look like a peanut kernel.

They do not have hard bones to hold them up. Instead, they use a hydrostatic skeleton. This works by using fluid inside their body cavity to stay firm. They can extend or contract by moving their muscles against this fluid. This allows them to be very flexible and mobile.

Finding food is a busy job for these worms. Most of them are deposit feeders. This means they eat bits of organic material from the sea floor. They stretch out their introvert to gather these tiny particles. Many species have a ring of short tentacles around their mouths. These tentacles use tiny hairs called cilia to move food into the mouth. Some special worms, like those in the family Themiste, are filter feeders. They use an elaborate crown of tentacles to catch food from the water. Some even have small protein hooks to help them scrape algae off rocks.

The history of naming these worms is quite old. A Swedish naturalist named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1767. Later, a French zoologist named Constantine Samuel Rafinesque used the name Sipuncula. The name comes from a Latin word meaning "little tube." This is a very good description of their shape. These worms are found in many different homes in the ocean. They burrow under sand, mud, or gravel. Some hide under stones or in rock crevices. You can even find them inside empty seashells or old whale bones.

Peanut worms have many ways to stay healthy and grow. Most species reproduce sexually and release eggs into the water. The eggs grow into tiny larvae that float in the ocean. Some very rare species can also reproduce through fission. This is when a worm splits into parts that grow into new worms. They have a simple nervous system with a brain and a nerve cord. They also use their skin or tentacles to breathe oxygen from the water. In some places, people even use these worms as food. They are a small but important part of life under the sea.
