Clams are amazing living things that belong to a group called bivalve molluscs. Most people know them as animals that live halfway buried in sand or mud. They spend much of their lives on the sea floor or in riverbeds. These creatures are very important to the web of life in the ocean. They act as filter feeders, which means they strain food from the water around them. This helps keep the water and the sea functioning well.

A clam's body has a very special way of working. It has two shells, called valves, that are usually the same size. These valves connect at a hinge with a flexible ligament. This ligament works like a spring to pull the shells apart. To close the shells, the clam uses one or two adductor muscles. The clam also has a strong foot used for burrowing into the ground. Inside, it has a heart, a mouth, a stomach, and even kidneys.

Many different animals rely on clams for food. Large mammals like the Atlantic and Pacific walrus eat them. Different types of seals, such as harbour seals and bearded seals, also enjoy clams. Even river otters in Asia and North America eat freshwater clams. Many birds, including the American flamingo and the whooping crane, hunt for them too. The Giant Pacific octopus even uses clams as a main part of its diet.

Clams have very different life stories. Some clams only live for one single year. However, at least one kind can live for more than 500 years! People have found many different types in many places. In North America, the hard clam is a very common edible species. On the West Coast, people have eaten clams for thousands of years. Archaeologists find old shells in places called middens to prove this.
