The giant clam is a truly amazing sea creature. It is the largest living bivalve, which is a type of animal with two shells.

These huge animals live in the shallow coral reefs of the South Pacific and Indian oceans. They can grow to be one meter long. Some clams can even weigh more than 200 kilograms. Because they live so long, they can reach over 100 years of age in the wild.

These clams have a very clever way of getting food. They are filter-feeders, but most of their nutrition comes from tiny plants called zooxanthellae.

The clam keeps these algae inside its soft mantle tissue. During the day, the clam opens its shell to let in sunlight. The algae use this light to perform photosynthesis, which is the way they make food. This special farming helps the clam grow quickly even in waters with very little food. Scientists even study this as a model for efficient solar energy systems.

Humans have known about these clams for a very long time. Indigenous peoples in East Asia knew them for thousands of years. A scholar named Antonio Pigafetta wrote about them in a journal in 1521.

In the past, people used parts of the shells for different things. For example, a piece of shell was used as a paint holder in ancient Egypt. Today, many giant clams are in danger because people hunt them for food or decoration.

Giant clams have many interesting physical features. The mantle is covered in hundreds or even thousands of tiny eyespots.

These spots can sense light and movement. If a shadow moves, the clam can partially close its shell to stay safe. Adult Tridacna gigas clams are unique because they cannot close their shells all the way. You can tell them apart from other species by counting the folds on their shells. The giant clam has four or five vertical folds.

Learning about giant clams helps us understand the ocean better. They are part of the coral reef ecosystem.

When they are babies, they are tiny larvae that float in the sea. Eventually, they settle on the ground and stay in one place for the rest of their lives. They reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm into the water during certain moon phases. This way of making babies is called broadcast spawning. It ensures that new clams can grow and live in the beautiful coral reefs.
