The giant clam is the largest living bivalve. A bivalve is a sea animal with two shells.

These clams live in warm, shallow coral reefs. They can grow to be one meter long. Some clams may even weigh over 200 kilograms. They can live for more than 100 years.

Giant clams grow very fast. This is because they farm tiny plants. These plants are called zooxanthellae.

The clams keep the algae in their mantle tissue. The mantle is the soft part of the clam. By day, the clam opens its shell. This lets sunlight reach the algae. The algae then make food for the clam. This helps the clam grow in poor waters.

The clam has many tiny eyespots. These spots are on the edge of the mantle.

These eyespots sense light and movement. If a shadow moves, the clam reacts. It can partially close its shell to stay safe.

Adult clams stay in one place. They cannot move once they grow up. To make babies, they release eggs and sperm into the sea. This is called broadcast spawning. They do this during certain moon phases. This helps the eggs meet and grow into new clams.
