Many people eat these clams for food. In the United States, people often call them "clams." One kind is the hard clam, or quahog.

These clams have two shells. Scientists call them bivalves.

The shells have special parts. Each shell has three interlocking parts called cardinal teeth. These teeth help the shells stay together. Some clams also have other small teeth. Their shells can have many shapes. Some look like circles. Others look like triangles.

One rare kind lives in coral reefs. It uses sand or mud to cover its shell. This helps it hide from others. Most of these clams have a large foot to help them move. They also have short siphons, which are tubes used for breathing and eating.
