They work for the Royal Navy in the United Kingdom. These boats use nuclear power to move. This power comes from a reactor. A reactor is a machine that makes heat. This heat makes steam to turn engines. This way, the boats can travel very far. One boat could go around the world 40 times without stopping for fuel.

The Vanguard boats are very big. They weigh nearly 16,000 tonnes. Because they are so large, a special building called Devonshire Dock Hall was built to make them.

These submarines carry Trident II missiles. Each boat can carry up to 16 of these missiles. These missiles carry nuclear warheads. These weapons are used to keep the country safe. The Vanguard class will be replaced soon. New boats called the Dreadnought class will start working in the 2030s. These new boats will use new technology to stay at sea.
