The Vanguard class is a group of four large submarines used by the Royal Navy.

These vessels are known as nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. They serve a very important job for the United Kingdom. They carry the nation's nuclear weapons to help keep the country safe. This role is called a nuclear deterrent. This means the submarines are there to prevent conflict. The four boats in this class are HMS Vanguard, HMS Victorious, HMS altogether, and HMS Vengeance.

They are the only platforms the UK uses for its nuclear weapons today.

These submarines work using a special kind of engine called a nuclear reactor.

Specifically, they use the Rolls-Royce PWR 2 reactor. This reactor creates heat to make steam. The steam then turns engines called turbines to move the boat. This system is very efficient for long trips. One submarine could travel around the entire world 40 times without needing more fuel. To keep them running, a special 'Core H' reactor is added during long repairs. This ensures the boats do not need to refuel for the rest of their lives. They use a pump jet to move through the water at speeds over 25 knots.

Building these massive boats required a lot of planning and new buildings. The design process began in the early 1980s. Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering helped with the detailed design. Because the boats were so huge, a special building was needed. Engineers built the Devonshire Dock Hall in Barrow-in-Furness just for this task. Margaret Thatcher laid the keel for the first boat, HMS Vanguard, in 1986. The first boat was launched in 1992 and began its service in 1993. The final boat, HMS Vengeance, was commissioned in 1999.

The Vanguard class is very large and carries many different tools.

Each submarine can hold up to 16 Trident II missiles. These missiles can carry nuclear warheads. The boats also have four torpedo tubes for other tasks. They use special sonar to 'see' underwater using sound waves. They have different types of sonar, like the Type 2054, to find things. They even have two periscopes with thermal cameras to look above the water. These tools help the crew navigate and stay safe while deep under the sea.

Even though these boats are very advanced, they will not stay in service forever. The Vanguard class is scheduled to be replaced starting in the early 2030s. The new group of submarines will be called the Dreadnought class. These new boats will use a new reactor called the PWR3. The government has already planned for this transition to keep the nuclear program going. Building these new boats will be a very large project. It is expected to cost about £31 billion over 35 years. This ensures the United Kingdom continues its sea patrols for many years to come.
