In the early 1900s, a new kind of warship changed how nations used the sea.

This ship was called HMS Dreadnought. It was so different from older ships that its name became a new category. Older ships were called pre-dreadnoughts. Any battleship built after the Dreadnought was simply called a dreadnought. These ships were symbols of national power. They even started a race between countries like the United Kingdom and Germany to see who could build the best ones.

How did these ships work so differently?

Most older ships used a mix of large and small guns. They would get close to enemies to use their fast-firing small guns. Dreadnought changed this with an "all-big-gun" design. This meant it only used very large, heavy guns. These big guns could hit targets from much further away. The ship also used steam turbine propulsion. This was a new way to use steam to move the ship through the water very quickly.

Many people helped think of these ideas.

In 1902, an expert named P. R. Alger suggested using eight large guns in twin turrets. An Italian architect named Vittorio Cuniberti also wrote about an ideal ship with twelve big guns. In the United Kingdom, Admiral John Fisher was a huge supporter of new technology. He is often called the father of the dreadnought fleet. He helped push the Royal Navy to use these new, powerful designs.

There are many important facts about this era of ships.

The HMS Dreadnought was launched in 1906. Within just five years, new ships called "super-dreadnoughts" were built to be even stronger. These ships were much larger and had better armor. Some ships, like the Japanese ships built around 1904, were among the first to try all-big-gun designs. Most dreadnoughts were scrapped after World War I because of the Washington Naval Treaty. However, many super-dreadnoughts kept working through World War II.

You can see how these ships connect to history today.

One dreadnought, the USS Texas, was launched in 1912. It is still around today as a museum ship. You can visit it to see how these massive machines looked. The dreadnought era changed how people thought about distance and power. It moved naval combat from short fights to long-range battles. This shift shaped the way navies operated for many years to come.
