This glacier is both long and narrow. It stretches for 77 kilometers across the mountains.

Ice moves in a specific way. The glacier starts at a high place. This point is 6,100 meters above sea level. The ice flows in a northward path. It moves east of the Garmo Peak. Eventually, the ice melts into water. This water flows into the Balandkiik River.

That river feeds into the Muksu and Vakhsh rivers. Finally, the water reaches the Aral Sea.

People have studied this ice for a long time. It was first found in 1878. It was named after Alexei Pavlovich Fedchenko. He was a famous Russian explorer. A German-Soviet expedition explored it more in 1928.

The glacier has changed its shape over the years. Between 1910 and 1913, the ice grew larger. It moved forward and blocked the Balyandlik River in 1914. Later, the ice began to recede or shrink.

There are many interesting facts about this place. The ice can be 450 meters thick.

The total volume of ice is huge. It is about one third of Lake Erie. The glacier is near many high peaks. Ismoil Somoni Peak is one of them. Gorbunov Peak is also nearby at 6,025 meters. The glacier is in the Gorno-Badakhshan province. It sits in the Yazgulem Range.

We can compare this glacier to other famous ice rivers. The Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram Mountains is 76 kilometers long. The Biafo Glacier is 67 kilometers long. The Bruggen Glacier in Chile is 66 kilometers long.

Even the South Inylchek Glacier is 60.5 kilometers long. The Vanch-Yakh Glacier is a giant among them. It helps provide water to many different rivers.
