The ice is long and narrow. It is 77 kilometers long. It is also very thick. The ice and its small side rivers hold a lot of water. This amount is about one third of Lake Erie. The glacier starts at a high place. Then, the ice melts. The water flows into the Balandkiik River. This water moves into many other rivers. It eventually reaches the Aral Sea. People found the glacier in 1878. It was named for Alexei Pavlovich Fedchenko. He was a Russian explorer. In 2023, Tajikistan gave the glacier a new name. This was part of a plan to change names from Russian to Tajik. The glacier has changed over time. It grew between 1910 and 1913. It blocked a river then. Later, it began to shrink.
