In India, there is an old social order. One group in this order is called Vaishya.

They are the third group in the system. They rank below Brahmins and Kshatriyas.

Vaishyas have many important jobs. Many people in this group farm the land. They also care for cattle. Some Vaishyas are traders. They may also be money-lenders or landowners. This work helps provide food and goods for others.

Some Vaishyas do not eat meat. They follow ideas like ahimsa. This means being kind to animals. This idea comes from Jainism and Buddhism.

Vaishyas also have a special spiritual status. They are called dvija. This means "twice born." They receive this through a special rite.

These traders helped spread Indian culture. They carried it to southeast Asia. A ruling family called the Gupta Empire was also Vaishya. A historian thinks they rose to power to fight unfair rulers.
