In ancient India, people were grouped into four social orders. One of these groups was called the kshatriya.

They were often warriors and leaders. Their main job was to rule and protect the land. This group was also known as the warrior aristocracy.

In the early days, leaders were called Rajan. These rulers protected the tribe and their cattle. Some leaders were chosen by a group of people. This group was called a Samiti. Later, the term kshatriya became more common. It meant having power over a specific area.

Kshatriyas had many duties. They studied the Vedas, which are holy books. They also gave gifts and performed fire sacrifices. Some kshatriya clans ruled in a way like a republic. They met in assemblies to talk about important issues.

Many royal families claimed to be kshatriya. Some said they came from the Solar dynasty. Others said they came from the Lunar dynasty. In the past, new ruling families often asked priests to name them kshatriya. This helped them show they were the rightful leaders of their lands.
