In India, there is an ancient social system called the varna. One of the four groups in this system is the Vaishya.

They are ranked third in this social order. This means they rank below the Brahmins and the Kshatriyas. The Vaishya group has a very important role in society. They have the duty to provide food and support for the higher groups. This work helps the whole community function well.

Vaishyas have many different jobs to do. Many people in this group work in agriculture. They also spend time taking care of cattle. Over time, their roles changed quite a bit. Some became landowners and others became traders. Some also worked as money-lenders. These jobs help keep goods and money moving.

This group has a special spiritual history. Vaishyas are part of a group called dvija. This term means "twice born." It refers to a second or spiritual birth. This happens through a special rite of initiation. This is a part of Hindu theology. It gives them a specific status in their faith.

History shows that Vaishyas were very active travelers. Indian traders helped spread Indian culture to many places. They carried these ideas as far as southeast Asia. There is also a famous period in history linked to them. The Gupta Empire was a Vaishya dynasty. A historian named Ram Sharan Sharma studied this. He thinks they may have risen to power against unfair rulers.

Many Vaishyas follow certain rules about food. Many of them choose to be vegetarians. This choice comes from the influence of other faiths. Jainism and Buddhism both teach a concept called ahimsa. This idea means not killing animals for food. Following ahimsa is a way to show kindness. It is one way these ideas shape daily life.
