Founded in 1477, it holds the title of the oldest university in Sweden and the entire Nordic region. The university serves as a vital center for academic study and research. It is organized into nine distinct faculties. These faculties are grouped into three main disciplinary domains. These domains are Humanities and Social Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy, and Science and Technology.

The university's structure allows for deep specialization in many fields. As of 2020, the institution supported a massive community of scholars. There were approximately 52,000 registered students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Additionally, the university hosted about 2,200 PhD students.

Students work through various stages of higher education. These stages include bachelor's, master's, licentiate, and doctoral degrees. This academic framework ensures that researchers are trained to the highest global standards.

The origins of the university are tied to the medieval church. Uppsala was already an important ecclesiastical center and a trade hub. In 1477, Pope Sixtus IV issued a papal bull to charter the university. This official document granted the school specific corporate rights. It gave Uppsala the same freedoms and privileges as the University of Bologna.

The university was permitted to establish four traditional faculties. These were theology, law, medicine, and philosophy. The archbishop of Uppsala served as the university's chancellor. He was responsible for protecting the rights of all university members.

During the 16th century, the university faced a period of great instability. The Reformation led to religious shifts across Sweden. Because Uppsala was a center for Catholicism, student numbers dropped significantly. Many Swedish students chose to travel to Protestant universities in Germany instead. However, the situation changed toward the end of the century. In 1593, the Uppsala Synod established Lutheran orthodoxy in Sweden.

This event brought new privileges to the university. By 1599, the student population was approximately 150 people. By 1600, the university began conferring degrees once again.

The 17th century marked an era of massive expansion for Uppsala. As Sweden grew into a great power, it needed trained civil servants. King Gustavus Adolphus became a key supporter of the institution. In 1624, he donated his personal property to the university. This gift included about 300 farms and mills.

This donation provided the university with long-term financial stability. The number of professorial chairs also grew from eight to seventeen. This growth helped the university meet the needs of the growing Swedish state.

Scientific discovery also flourished during this period of growth. The scientist Olaus Rudbeck was a dominant figure at the university. He was an architect, engineer, and gifted scientist. Rudbeck helped build the anatomical theatre at the Gustavianum.

He also helped plant the first botanical garden. This garden was later tended by the famous Carl Linnaeus.

The university has also influenced the broader culture of Sweden. Many Swedish academic traditions originated within its walls. For example, the tradition of wearing a white student cap began in Uppsala. The university also uses a unique student nation system. This system is shared with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
