During its first days, only a few dozen students attended classes. Seven professors taught across four initial faculties: philosophy, theology, medicine, and law. Bernardus Schotanus, a professor of law and mathematics, served as the first rector magnificus. Anna Maria van Schurman was the university's first female student. She even wrote a Latin poem for the official inauguration. The university flourished during the Dutch Golden Age.

Throughout its history, the university has faced significant changes and challenges. In 1806, French occupying authorities downgraded the university to an école secondaire, or high school. This was a major setback for its academic status. However, the university regained its status in 1813 after the United Kingdom of the Netherlands was established. In the mid-nineteenth century, the "Utrechtian School" of science emerged. Leading scientists like Pieter Harting and Franciscus Donders introduced the educational laboratory. This was a new way for students to learn through practical experience. As the school grew, it moved much of its operations to the De Uithof campus starting in the 1960s.

Today, the university is recognized as a world leader in several academic subjects. In the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities, it ranked 56th globally.

Its performance in specific fields is even more impressive. It ranked 2nd in the world for public administration. It also placed 8th in earth sciences and 11th in water resources. Other high rankings include pharmacy at 12th and oceanography at 17th. The university's reputation is supported by its high volume of scientific output. In 2024, it published 8,314 scientific articles and awarded over 600 PhD degrees. This shows the massive scale of its intellectual contribution.

The impact of Utrecht University extends to many influential people and global networks. The school has produced 12 Nobel Prize winners and 1 Pulitzer Prize winner. Its graduates have also held many high offices. This includes six Prime Ministers of the Netherlands and six foreign heads of state. Even the Dutch royal house has four members who are alumni. The university maintains strong international ties through several professional groups. It is a member of the Coimbra Group and the League of European Research Universities. These connections help the university collaborate with other top institutions around the world.
