UCLouvain is the largest French-speaking university in Belgium. It is also one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in Europe. The university is a massive network of different campuses. While the main center is in Louvain-la-Neuve, there are sites in Brussels, Charleroi, Mons, Tournai, and Namur.

It serves as a major hub for research and education across several complex fields. The university is organized into distinct sectors to manage its many specialized programs.

Students at UCLouvain choose from three main academic sectors. The Sector of Human Sciences includes many diverse departments. Students can study law and criminology or philosophy and arts. There are also departments for history, archaeology, and linguistics.

This sector also covers economics, political sciences, and theology. These programs help students understand how societies and human thoughts work.

The Sector of Health Sciences focuses on medical expertise. This sector includes the study of medicine and dentistry. It also contains schools for pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and public health.

To support this learning, the university operates several major hospitals. These include the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels. They also manage university hospitals in Namur, Dinant, and Yvoir. These facilities allow students to practice medicine in real-world settings.

The third major area is the Sector of Science and Technology. This sector contains the Louvain School of Engineering. It also includes the Faculty of Bioengineering and the Faculty of Science. Students can dive deep into chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

Other specialized areas include architecture, urban planning, and veterinary medicine. This sector provides the technical tools needed for modern scientific discovery. It connects theoretical classroom learning with practical engineering applications.

The history of the university is very long and contains many changes. The original University of Louvain was founded in 1425 in Leuven. This was the first university in the Low Countries. However, it was abolished by law in 1797. A new Catholic university was founded in Mechlin in 1834. This institution moved to Leuven in 1835 and took the city's famous name.

It became known as the Catholic University of Louvain.

A major turning point occurred in 1968 due to linguistic issues. The university split into two separate institutions. The Dutch-speaking part stayed in Leuven as the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The French-speaking part had to move to a new location.

They moved to Wallonia, a region where French is the official language. A brand new town called Louvain-la-Neuve was built specifically for them. The first stone for this new campus was laid in 1971. The transfer of all faculties was finished by 1979.

In recent years, the university has continued to grow through mergers. In 2011, the university absorbed the Catholic University of Mons (FUCaM). This added the Mons campus to the UCLouvain network. Later, in September 2018, a major merger took place. The university merged with Saint-Louis University in Brussels. This merger created the current branding known as UCLouvain.

This change helped unify different French-speaking academic groups.

UCLouvain also maintains a deep connection to culture and the arts. The Musée L. in Louvain-la-Neuve is the largest university museum in Belgium. It holds a massive collection of 32,000 art and scientific objects. Visitors can see works by famous artists like Picasso, Magritte, and Goya.
