The history of the university is very long and contains many changes. The original University of Louvain was founded in 1425 in Leuven. This was the first university in the Low Countries. However, it was abolished by law in 1797. A new Catholic university was founded in Mechlin in 1834. This institution moved to Leuven in 1835 and took the city's famous name.
A major turning point occurred in 1968 due to linguistic issues. The university split into two separate institutions. The Dutch-speaking part stayed in Leuven as the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The French-speaking part had to move to a new location.
In recent years, the university has continued to grow through mergers. In 2011, the university absorbed the Catholic University of Mons (FUCaM). This added the Mons campus to the UCLouvain network. Later, in September 2018, a major merger took place. The university merged with Saint-Louis University in Brussels. This merger created the current branding known as UCLouvain.
UCLouvain also maintains a deep connection to culture and the arts. The Musée L. in Louvain-la-Neuve is the largest university museum in Belgium. It holds a massive collection of 32,000 art and scientific objects. Visitors can see works by famous artists like Picasso, Magritte, and Goya.
