In the past, the school had to move. It split into two groups. One group spoke Dutch. The other group spoke French.

The French group moved to a new place. People even built a new town for them! This town is called Louvain-la-Neuve.

Today, the school is very large. It has many buildings in different cities. It also has a big museum with art.

The university is a place where people study many subjects. Students can learn about law, science, or even art. It is a very important place for learning and research.

Learning at the university happens in many different ways. There are many different sectors for students to choose from. One sector is for human sciences like history and languages. Another sector is for health sciences like medicine and pharmacy. There is also a sector for science and technology. Students can study things like biology, chemistry, or math. This helps them prepare for many different jobs in the future.

The history of this university is very long and complex. It first began in the year 1425 in a town called Leuven.

This was the very first university in Belgium. However, the original school was closed by law in 1797. Later, a new Catholic university was started in 1834 in Mechlin. This school moved to Leuven in 1835. It became known as the Catholic University of Louvain. It used the famous reputation of the city to grow.

In 1968, the university went through a big change. It split into two different universities because of language. One part spoke Dutch and stayed in Leuven. The other part spoke French and had to move.

They moved to a new place called Louvain-la-Neuve. This town was built just to hold the university. The first stone for this new campus was laid in 1971. The move was finished by the year 1979. Later, the school merged with Saint-Louis University in 2018.

UCLouvain is more than just a place for classes. It has large hospitals to help people who are sick.

Students at UCLouvain choose from three main academic sectors. The Sector of Human Sciences includes many diverse departments. Students can study law and criminology or philosophy and arts. There are also departments for history, archaeology, and linguistics.

This sector also covers economics, political sciences, and theology. These programs help students understand how societies and human thoughts work.

The Sector of Health Sciences focuses on medical expertise. This sector includes the study of medicine and dentistry. It also contains schools for pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and public health.

To support this learning, the university operates several major hospitals. These include the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc in Brussels. They also manage university hospitals in Namur, Dinant, and Yvoir. These facilities allow students to practice medicine in real-world settings.

The third major area is the Sector of Science and Technology. This sector contains the Louvain School of Engineering. It also includes the Faculty of Bioengineering and the Faculty of Science. Students can dive deep into chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

The history of the university is very long and contains many changes. The original University of Louvain was founded in 1425 in Leuven. This was the first university in the Low Countries. However, it was abolished by law in 1797. A new Catholic university was founded in Mechlin in 1834. This institution moved to Leuven in 1835 and took the city's famous name.

A major turning point occurred in 1968 due to linguistic issues. The university split into two separate institutions. The Dutch-speaking part stayed in Leuven as the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The French-speaking part had to move to a new location.

They moved to Wallonia, a region where French is the official language. A brand new town called Louvain-la-Neuve was built specifically for them. The first stone for this new campus was laid in 1971. The transfer of all faculties was finished by 1979.

In recent years, the university has continued to grow through mergers. In 2011, the university absorbed the Catholic University of Mons (FUCaM). This added the Mons campus to the UCLouvain network. Later, in September 2018, a major merger took place. The university merged with Saint-Louis University in Brussels. This merger created the current branding known as UCLouvain.

This change helped unify different French-speaking academic groups.

UCLouvain also maintains a deep connection to culture and the arts. The Musée L. in Louvain-la-Neuve is the largest university museum in Belgium. It holds a massive collection of 32,000 art and scientific objects. Visitors can see works by famous artists like Picasso, Magritte, and Goya.
