Johns Hopkins University is a private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland.

It is widely recognized as the first research university in the United States. The institution was incorporated in 1867 and officially opened in 1876. Unlike older American colleges, it was built using a European research model. This model focuses on the active discovery of new knowledge rather than just teaching existing facts. Today, the university is a global leader in science, medicine, and various other academic fields.

The university operates through a specific academic mechanism that integrates teaching with original research.

The first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, believed that professors should be active researchers in libraries and laboratories. This approach ensures that those teaching students are also the ones discovering new information. This method revolutionized higher education in the United States. It shifted the academic focus toward the scientific discovery of new knowledge. By combining advanced scholarship with professional schools, the university set a new standard for American education.

Johns Hopkins is organized into ten distinct academic divisions. These divisions are spread across several different locations.

Other specialized institutions include the Peabody Institute for music and the Applied Physics Laboratory in Howard County. The university also maintains graduate campuses in Washington, D.C., Italy, and China.

The history of the university began with a massive philanthropic gift.

Johns Hopkins, a Quaker businessman, died in 1873 and left a $7 million bequest. In 2024, this amount would be equivalent to $166 million. This was the largest philanthropic gift in U.S. history at that time. The funds were intended to establish both a university and the Johns Hopkins Hospital. There has been historical debate regarding Hopkins's relationship to slavery. Some research suggests enslaved individuals were part of his household, while other scholars question the clarity of the census records from that era.

As the university grew, it underwent significant changes in its physical location and structure. The school initially operated in downtown Baltimore because the endowment was tied to railroad stocks.

Eventually, the university moved to the Homewood Estate in 1902. This campus is characterized by Federal-style architecture inspired by the original Homewood House. The university has also been a leader in specialized education. It founded the nation's first school of public health in 1916. It also established the Johns Hopkins University Press in 1878, which is the oldest continuous university press in America.

The university's impact is measurable through its massive research and financial scale.

For over four consecutive decades, Johns Hopkins has led all U.S. universities in annual research and development expenditures. It has also received the highest amount of federal research funding every year since 1979. In 2018, Michael Bloomberg donated $1.8 billion to his alma mater. This was the largest private donation in modern history to a higher education institution. This gift allows the school to practice need-blind admission and meet the full financial needs of its students.

Beyond science and medicine, the university maintains a strong presence in other areas of life. The Blue Jays men's lacrosse team is a notable part of campus culture.

Since its founding in 1883, the team has won 44 national titles. The university also connects to global policy through the School of Advanced International Studies. Its work at the Applied Physics Laboratory makes it a major governmental defense contractor. These diverse connections show how the university influences science, culture, defense, and international relations.
