Unlike many other faiths, it does not require followers to follow one single creed. A creed is a formal set of rules about what a person must believe. Instead, people in this tradition are held together by shared values and covenants. These values often focus on love and social justice for all people. Because of this, the beliefs of individual members can vary quite a lot. Every congregation might have its own unique way of thinking and practicing.

Members find inspiration from many different sources around the world. They do not use one official holy book for everything. Instead, they may look to Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, or Judaism. Some might also study Sikhism, Taoism, or the teachings of the Bahá'í Faith.

This way of learning is called pluralistic worship. It means they welcome many different ideas into their spiritual life. They also value intellectual freedom, which means they encourage people to think for themselves. This helps them find insight from all major world religions.

This tradition grew from two older Christian groups. The first was the American Unitarian Association, which was started in 1825. The second was the Universalist Church of America, which began in 1793.

These two groups eventually came together in 1961. This merger created the modern Unitarian Universalist Association, or the UUA. The UUA is based in Boston, Massachusetts. This joining helped bring different ideas into one large community.

History shows that Unitarians and Universalists had very different starting points. Early Unitarians often rejected the idea of the Trinity. They believed in a single, unitary idea of God.

They also moved away from certain older Christian teachings. Universalists had a different focus on how God treats people. They believed that all human souls would eventually be saved or reconciled with God. They did not believe in everlasting damnation. These two different paths eventually met to form the current tradition.

Today, Unitarian Universalism is a global community with many members. In 2024, about 1.7 million adults in America identified with this faith. This represents about 0.5% of the adult population in the United States. While most members live in the U.S., the faith reaches other places too. For example, there is a group of thirty congregations in the Philippines. There is also the Canadian Unitarian Council, which became independent in 2002. This shows how a small idea can grow into a large, worldwide family.
