geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Ñuble Region is a special part of south-central Chile. It is actually the smallest region in the whole country by area. The name comes from the Mapudungun word Ngüflew, which means 'narrow river.' To the west, the region meets the Pacific Ocean. To the east, it borders the province of Neuquén in Argentina. The Maule Region sits to the north, and the Biobío Region is to the south.

This land has many different shapes and feelings. In the east, the Andes Mountains rise up very high. The highest spot is Nevados de Chillán, which reaches 3,212 meters. These mountains have strong volcanic activity. In the middle, there is a wide area called the Intermediate Depression. It is nearly 100 km wide near the city of Chillán. This flat area has lots of water from the Itata and Ñuble rivers. This makes it a great place for farming and forests.

Creating this region was a long journey for the people living there. It was once part of the Biobío Region. A group of citizens worked for more than 21 years to make it its own region. This group included mayors and social leaders. In 2017, President Michelle Bachelet signed the law to create it. The new Ñuble Region officially started on 6 September 2018.

This urban center has 223,070 people. Other large towns include San Carlos and Coihueco. Most of the land is rural, meaning it is mostly countryside. Visitors find many wonderful things to do in Ñuble. Some people go to the Termas de Chillán for its thermal waters and forests. Others visit the Avendaño Lake in Quillón for swimming or sailing. The region is also famous for making beautiful things by hand. In Quinchamalí, people make white clay pottery. In Coihueco, people are known for wood carvings and weaving.
