Neuquén is a busy capital city in Argentina. It sits in the far east of the Neuquén province. The city is located near where two rivers meet. These are the Limay and Neuquén rivers. Together, they flow into the Río Negro. This area is part of a region called the Alto Valle del Río Negro.

The city's name comes from the Mapuche language. It means "water that has strength." This name was used for the river long before the city existed. The town was once a small place called Confluencia. In 1904, it was officially named Neuquén and became a capital. It is the newest provincial capital in all of Argentina. The name is also a palindrome. This means you can read it the same way forward and backward.

Life in Neuquén relies on the rivers and the land. The province is usually quite dry and arid. However, the rivers provide water for many farms. These farms grow delicious fruits like apples and pears. The city is also a center for oil and gas. Large oil fields called Vaca Muerta are found to the west. These fields hold the third largest reserves of shale gas and oil in the world.

Many people live in the city and nearby towns. The 2022 Census showed over 500,000 people in the whole urban area. This makes it the largest urban group in Patagonia. You can travel around using many different ways. There are 30 different bus lines for local trips. A commuter rail called Tren del Valle connects the city to Plottier and Cipolletti. There is also an airport for flying to other big cities.

There are many interesting things to see and do. You can visit the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes to see art. Some museums are even inside old railroad buildings. Sports fans enjoy visiting the Estadio Ruca Che. This stadium has 8,000 seats. It even hosted a big basketball championship in 2001.
