earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Trou aux Cerfs is a very special place in Mauritius. It is a dormant volcano with a crater lake. A crater is the large hole at the top of a volcano. This volcano is also a cinder cone. That means it has a clear cone shape. It sits high up in a place called Curepipe. This site is a beautiful part of the natural world.

The volcano formed a long time ago. It was made during the second phase of volcanic activity. This activity created the island of Mauritius. The crater was made less than 2 million years ago. It is 80 meters deep. The width of the crater is between 300 and 350 meters. This large hole holds a lake of water.

Experts study how the volcano behaves today. It is currently dormant. This means it is quiet and not erupting. The volcano last erupted 700,000 years ago. Even though it is quiet, it could change. It could become active again. This might happen within the next thousand years.

Many living things call this volcano their home. You can find long-tailed macaques living there. Fruit bats also live on the volcano. Many exotic birds visit the area too. The red fody is one of these birds. Some birds are endemic. This means they only live in this specific place. The martin and the swiftlet are endemic birds.

Plants grow all around the crater as well. You might see pine trees growing there. Two types of Trochetia plants live here. One type is the Trochetia blackburniana. The other is the very rare Trochetia triflora. You can also find manglier and fanjan plants. These plants are part of the local environment. They help make the volcano a unique home.
