Trofim Lysenko was a Soviet agronomist who studied how to grow crops.

He lived during a time when the Soviet Union needed more food for its people. Lysenko had big goals for farming, but he did not follow the rules of real science. Instead, he used ideas that were not actually true. He rejected the study of genetics, which explains how traits pass from parents to offspring. His incorrect ideas became known as Lysenkoism. Because he had a lot of power, his views became the official rule for the country.

Lysenko focused on a process he called vernalization, or "Jarovization" in Russian.

He believed he could change how plants grew by using cold and moisture. He treated winter wheat seeds with water and cold to make them act like spring wheat. Lysenko claimed this change could be inherited by the next generation of plants. He thought the children of these plants would also be able to survive harsh weather. However, this method was actually known by farmers long before him. He also made mistakes when he tried to use math to study plant heat.

Lysenko grew up in a peasant family in Ukraine. He was born on September 29, 1898, in the village of Karlovka. He did not learn to read or write until he was 13 years old. Later, he studied at schools for horticulture in Poltava and Uman. He graduated with a degree in agronomy in 1925. After his studies, he worked in Azerbaijan at a breeding station. There, he worked on growing crops like legumes to help feed livestock.

Lysenko became very powerful in the Soviet scientific world. In 1940, he became the director of the Institute of Genetics. He used his influence with leaders like Joseph Stalin to stay in power.

This power allowed him to silence other scientists who disagreed with him. He called his critics "enemies of the people" to make them look bad. Many scientists lost their jobs or were sent to prison because of this. One famous botanist named Nikolai Vavilov was arrested and died in custody.

Lysenko's work had a big impact on the world. His ideas were used in other countries like China from the late 1940s. However, his methods often led to lower food yields on farms. This caused many problems for agriculture in the Soviet Union for a long time. His influence began to fade in the mid-1960s. Even though he was a famous leader, his science was not correct.
