Trofim Lysenko was a man who studied plants. 
But his ideas were not correct science. He rejected genetics. Genetics is the study of how traits pass from parents to children. Lysenko used his power to stop other scientists. He did not like people who disagreed with him. He used his influence with leaders like Joseph Stalin. This helped him make his ideas the law. Many scientists lost their jobs. Some were even sent to prison. One famous scientist was Nikolai Vavilov.

Lysenko grew up in a peasant family in Ukraine. He was born on September 29, 1898, in the village of Karlovka. He did not learn to read or write until he was 13 years old. Later, he studied at schools for horticulture in Poltava and Uman. He graduated with a degree in agronomy in 1925. After his studies, he worked in Azerbaijan at a breeding station. There, he worked on growing crops like legumes to help feed livestock. 
Lysenko became very powerful in the Soviet scientific world. In 1940, he became the director of the Institute of Genetics. He used his influence with leaders like Joseph Stalin to stay in power. 

Lysenko's work had a big impact on the world. His ideas were used in other countries like China from the late 1940s. However, his methods often led to lower food yields on farms. This caused many problems for agriculture in the Soviet Union for a long time. His influence began to fade in the mid-1960s. Even though he was a famous leader, his science was not correct.

One of the most significant victims of this era was the botanist Nikolai Vavilov. Vavilov was a respected scientist who had initially supported Lysenko's early work. However, as Lysenko gained power, he and his supporters began to attack Vavilov's theories. In 1940, the Soviet authorities arrested Vavilov, and several of his colleagues died while in custody. 
Despite his high status, Lysenko's methods often failed to produce the results he promised. His ideas contributed to lower agricultural yields across the Soviet Union from the late 1930s until the mid-1960s. While he claimed to have increased millet yields significantly, these successes were often based on limited experiments. 
Lysenko's legacy serves as a major lesson in the importance of separating science from politics. When scientific truth is replaced by political ideology, the results can be devastating for society.
