Nikolai Vavilov was a famous scientist who studied plants.

He was a botanist and a geneticist. This means he studied how plants grow and how they pass traits to their babies. Vavilov wanted to find ways to grow more food. His father had suffered because of crop failures and hunger. Because of this, Vavilov became obsessed with ending famine. He wanted to make sure people always had enough to eat.

Vavilov discovered something called centers of origin. These are specific places on Earth where certain plants first began to grow. To find them, he went on many long trips. He traveled to places like Iran, China, and Ethiopia. He even visited Mexico and South America. In 1916, he went to Iran to collect legume seeds. These are plants like beans, lentils, and peas. He found many new samples there. He used these seeds to learn how plants change over time.

To keep these plants safe, Vavilov created the first seed bank.

A seed bank is like a library, but for seeds instead of books. He built this at the Institute of Plant Industry in Leningrad. By 1933, his collection had over 148,000 different specimens. This was the largest collection in the world. He wanted to protect plant diversity from being lost. He knew that having many types of seeds helped us grow better crops. This collection was so important that scientists protected it even during a long war.

However, Vavilov faced a very hard time in his life. A man named Trofim Lysenko disagreed with Vavilov's science. Lysenko believed in different ideas about how plants grow. Lysenko also had the support of the leader Joseph Stalin.

Because of this disagreement, Vavilov was arrested in 1940. He was accused of spying and ruining agriculture. He was sentenced to death in 1941. Later, his sentence was changed to twenty years in prison. Sadly, Vavilov died in a prison in 1943.

Even though his life ended sadly, his work changed the world. Many years later, the government said he was a hero.

His ideas helped scientists breed better wheat and maize. These are the grains that many people eat every day. His seed bank helped create most of the legume crops used in the Soviet Union. Today, we still use his methods to study how to grow food. His life shows how much one person can do for the whole world.
