He was born in a small Russian village called Turya. His father was a craftsman who worked with gold and silver. His mother came from a family of peasants. Growing up was often very hard for him. His father struggled with drinking and could be unkind. After a difficult moment when he was eleven, Pitirim decided to be independent. He worked hard to study and learn about the world.

Sorokin's life changed a lot during the Russian Revolution. He was a professor at a university in Saint Petersburg. He also worked for the government as a leader. Because he disagreed with the new leaders, he was arrested. The government even sentenced him to death. Luckily, his friends helped save him from this. He was sent away into exile instead. Eventually, he moved to the United States to start a new life.

In America, Sorokin became a very important teacher. He taught at the University of Minnesota first. Later, in 1930, he moved to Harvard University. He was asked to lead their new sociology department. Sociology is the study of how people live together. Sorokin wrote 37 books and over 400 articles. One of his famous books is called Social and Cultural Dynamics.

He spent many years studying how different cultures grow and change.

Sorokin had many big ideas about how the world works. He believed that societies move through different stages. He called one stage "ideational," where people focus on spiritual things. He called another stage "sensate," where people focus on material things. He worried that modern society was becoming too focused on things rather than people. He also studied how people are ranked in society. This is called social stratification. He wanted to understand how wealth and power are shared.

One of his most important ideas was about being kind. He called this altruism. Sorokin believed that if people practiced altruism, there would be less war. He thought peace comes when different groups share similar values. He also wanted people from different countries to be friends. In 1944, he wrote about how Russia and the United States had things in common. He hoped that being kind and understanding would lead to a better, more peaceful world for everyone.
