Yuri Levada was a famous Russian scientist. He studied sociology and political science. Sociology is the study of how people live together. He wanted to know how people feel about their lives. This work is very important for understanding a country. Levada helped many people understand Russian society.

Levada used surveys to gather information. A survey is a set of questions for many people. He asked questions about the economy and social life. He also studied psychology and marketing. These surveys helped him track changes over time. He looked at how people felt about big changes in their world.

Levada began his career a long time ago. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1952. He earned a PhD in philosophy in 1966. He worked at the Russian Academy of Sciences for many years. He was even the first Russian professor to teach sociology. He taught at the faculty of journalism at Moscow State University.

His life was not always easy. In 1969, he lost his rank as a professor. The government did not like some of his ideas. In 1972, many sociologists lost their jobs during a purge. Levada moved to the Central Economic Mathematical Institute. He started a seminar that was not fully legal. This group helped scientists work together anyway.

In 1988, he helped start the VCIOM center. He was the director of VCIOM from 1992 to 2003. In 2003, the government tried to take control of the center. All the workers quit to keep their work independent. They started the Levada Center. This group still publishes a book called "Russian Public Opinion."
